Recent Developments

The Division of Urology Residency Training Program aims to provide residents with a wide breadth of experience managing medical and surgical disease of the genitourinary tract as well as an in-depth understanding of basic and clinical research in all domains of Urology.

We are a high volume center that specializes in minimally-invasive, laparoscopic and robotic cases as well as complex oncologic and reconstructive surgery. We perform over 50 radical cystectomies both robotic and open a year, 300 robotic radical prostatectomies a year, 10 retroperitoneal lymph node dissections a year, and 40 percutaneous nephrolithitomies a year. We perform a high volume of partial and radical nephrectomies in a variety of surgical approaches including robotic, laparoscopic, or open. We provide a graded increase in patient care responsibility. By providing two years of chief resident level experience (PGY4 and PGY5), our residents graduate with excellent experience, confidence and exception operative acumen.

By the chief year residents have mastered the ACGME competencies (patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, and interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice) and have acquired the surgical and mental skills necessary for pursuit of either an academic or private career in urology.

We accept two residents per year into a five-year program. Our main goal is to provide a nurturing environment in which residents can acquire the surgical, medical, research, and decision making skills to become outstanding urologists.

The nearby Child Health Institute of New Jersey is a center for biomedical research and pediatric care, featuring an ambulatory care center, research laboratories and offices for Robert Wood Johnson Medical School faculty.

University Medical Center of Princeton at PlainsboroWith an opening date of May 22, 2012, the new, state-of-the art hospital is a dynamic center of medicine and surgery.The new hospital and 171-acre medical campus. The new Center for Surgical Care at UMCPP provides a comprehensive range of advanced surgical procedures. It includes: 8 State-of-the-Art Operating Suites, A Hybrid Operating Room, which combines high-resolution, 3-D imaging capabilities with fully equipped operating room technology in a single space. 2 Procedure Rooms for Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) treatments for patients with kidney stone disease and for cystoscopies to diagnose urological conditions.

Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas University Hospital Somerset is a general medical and surgical hospital in Somerville, NJ. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset is 250 beds. The hospital had 16,000 admissions in the latest year for which data are available. It performed over 8000 annual inpatient surgeries. Its emergency room had over 54,000 visits.

Research

Our residents are continually involved in multiple research projects throughout the year. There is a strong faculty support, encouragement and guidance for any idea a resident may have. With a strong relationship with the Cancer Institute of New Jersey research labs, residents have access to state of the art equipment and skilled personnel to help carry out their research. With the recent merger with Rutgers University we have an even stronger research program with the ability to easily translate clinical studies from basic science research.

Recent Developments

RoboticsSi HD System

We have recently added a new DaVinci XI (Oct 2014) in addition to our already existing DaVinci systems. These include dual console with simulator pack to allow further skills training and simulation for resident education. Currently between all sites our program has access to 6 DaVinci Systems. Including 1 DaVinci XI, 3 DaVinci SI HD's (2 with Dual Consoles)

 

New Pediatric Operating Rooms

BMSCH

As our pediatric urology program is expanding so is our children's hospital with new operating rooms for the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital now open.

 

 

 

Enhanced Cystoscopy
