Message from the Chief of Urology

Isaac Y Kim MD, PhD

Thank you for your interest in the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Division of Urology.  Established over 27 years ago, the Division of Urology has experienced significant growth and expansion recently, especially with our transition from UMDNJ to Rutgers.  Our division spans across both the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey with nearly every subspecialty within urology covered by fellowship trained attendings.  Specialized care is offered in general urology, endourology, urologic oncology, pelvic floor medicine and reconstructive surgery, and pediatric urology.

Our division offers the latest in robotic and endoscopic surgery including approximately 50 radical cystectomies both robotic and open a year as well as 300 robotic radical prostatectomies a year. Several robotic inguinal lymphadenectomies have been performed by Dr. Sammy Elsamra.   Our division is a high volume center for retroperitoneal lymph node dissections performed by Dr. Thomas Jang.  Nephron sparing approaches for upper tract urothelial carcinoma are also offered routinely for appropriately selected patients.  Dr.  Tunuguntla offer the latest in the evaluation and management of urinary and fecal incontinence.

Research into new treatment modalities and paradigms is ongoing and our division is at the vanguard of advancing state-of-the-art urologic care.  Dr. Olweny is conducting research on hypoxia induced injury pertinent to partial nephrectomy in animal models while my lab is conducting research on androgen receptor pathways in cancer.  Clinical trials for metastatic prostate cancer, BCG-refractory bladder cancer, and novel imaging for renal cell carcinoma are open and accruing.

Dr. Nikhil Gupta specializes in Andrology and Male Infertility.

Our dedication to community service is paramount and Dr. Goldsmith heads the resident clinic at RWJUH.

Recently our residency training program has moved to a 5-year duration, while maintaining a 6 month research rotation. Our training program maintains a comprehensive complement of fellowship trained faculty who are full time members of our academic teaching faculty.

Our dedication to residency training and education is reflected by our 100% American Board of Urology pass rate.  Our residents have access to two robotic systems, a teaching console, single port robotic system, and two robotic simulators.  All residents benefit from a core training program centered at RWJMS, the Cancer Institute of NJ and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital.  Our children's hospital also recently opened the Center for Advanced Pediatric Surgery, a 17,000 square

foot facility dedicated to pediatric surgical care. When not based at our home campus, our residents rotate at Princeton University Medical Center and RWJBarnabas Somerset University Hospital. Both of these teaching hospitals are under the directorships of dedicated clinical faculty with expertise in general, robotic and female urology.
