PGY 5 -- Urology 3
The PGY 5 residents spend 6 months as Chief Resident on each
of two services. The Princeton Medical
Center rotation provides the resident a high volume cutting edge private practice
experience. The resident participates in the outpatient and inpatient management of
all patients with a concentration on medical and surgical management of BPH, urinary
tract calculi, urinary tract obstruction, erectile dysfunction, urinary tract infection,
and benign and malignant neoplasms of the genitourinary tract that are commonly managed in the
private practice setting. The PGY5 also spends 6 months as Chief at
Cooper Medical Center.
This rotation is very heavily weighted towards the intraoperative
experience and allowing the resident to gain confidence through independence.
The Chief at Cooper runs a large indigent population clinic and is responsible,
with appropriate supervision, for directing the care and management of all patients.
In addition the Cooper Chief operates with the Cooper Urology Faculty 3-4 days per
week. This operative experience includes a large volume of laproscopic cases and the
Cooper Chief is expected to become proficient at laproscopic nephrectomy and to begin
to develop robotic surgery skills. This provides additional operative experience at
a tertiary referral center and prepares the resident for his or her duties as Chief
Resident on the busy Robert Wood Johnson Adult Service.
