Department of Surgery

We are sad to share the news of the passing of our Chairman, Stephen F. Lowry, MD, MBA, on June 4, 2011. Dr. Lowry was an innovative educator, an exceptional researcher, and a dedicated mentor to other physicians and scientists. Dr. Lowry joined UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 1997 as Chair of the Department of Surgery and was named Senior Associate Dean for Education in 2006.

Dr. Lowry was known as one of the world’s experts on inflammation and how inflammation disorders are responsible for much of the disease that we face today. His seminal research investigations defined the central role of inflammatory mediators as a mechanism for septic shock and organ dysfunction in critically ill patients. Dr. Lowry led the implementation of a new medical education curriculum at RWJMS; and in 2007, he was the first faculty member to be named to the Harvey Professorship in Innovative Teaching. He served on the Editorial Boards of several prestigious journals and was the recipient of numerous awards.

Dr. Alan Graham, Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery, is overseeing the activities of the department at this time.
